COMMUTERS faced travel chaos today after a suspected cable theft brought Metro services to a halt.

The metal thieves are believed to have struck on the Sunderland extension of the line in the early hours.

Nexus, which operates the service, confirmed there were no trains running between Park Lane and South Hylton, in both directions, from 6.25am. A much-delayed service had resumed by 9am.

British Transport Police are investigating.
