Guests cut a dash in their best bib and tucker for the city’s annual Retail and Style awards.

The Bridges’ central square was transformed for the ceremony, jointly organised by the shopping centre and Sun FM.

Among the winners was Paul Swinney who won the Made in Sunderland gong for his Mackem Dictionary, which raised funds for the Foundation of Light.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” he said. “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted. I never expected the Mackem Dictionary to take off in the way it did. It was a celebration of our city and culture, and it’s great that it raised so much for charity.”

Ian Wong from Asiana restaurant and businessman Harry Collinson picked up the Experience It Here Award for this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations in Keel Square.

Ian said: “This award was wholly unexpected, but we are over the moon. We would have been happy with 1,500 people turning up, but 3,000 came along. Next year it’s going to be even bigger and better.”

Avenue Designer Childrenswear picked up two gongs: Best Medium Retailer and Best Customer Service.

Owner Kevin Coade, who runs the Olive Street business with wife Brenda, said: “We’ve had the business for the past 30 years, but it’s really taken off in the past three years with us managing to stock brands exclusively in the North East, securing them over bigger retailers. We feel particularly proud of the customer service award as we’re known for our friendly customer service.”

Highlights also included performances by Lawson, Izzy Bizu and homegrown indie folk singer The Lake Poets.
