MEET the young Wearside singing stars of tomorrow who are aiming for the top.
Abby Dolan, nine, and Kate Hilton, 14, have reached the regional final of top talent competition TeenStar and will perform at the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle on March 23.
The pair wowed judges at the audition stage, where thousands of hopefuls launched their bid to sing in the national final, live at London’s O2 Arena.
The competition is split into different age groups, with Kate doing battle with the Mid Teens and Abby representing the Pre Teens, a new category for this year’s competition.
Abby, who goes to East Herrington Primary School, has been singing since she was seven and will be performing On My Own from the hit musical Les Miserables.
“I’m delighted I’ve made it through and I’ve been working really hard,” she said.
Mum Lesley told the Echo she thinks her daughter will do herself proud.
She said: “She just enjoys singing and loves putting on a show.
“She’s been in a version of Oliver and done panto, so just likes to perform.
“I think she’ll give this her best shot. It’s definitely the biggest show she’s been in so I think she’ll be a little bit nervous but we’ll all be there supporting her.”
Grangetown’s Kate got into singing when she started at Southmoor Academy and will also enjoy the backing of her family and friends on the big day.
She has not settled on a song yet but will more than likely be inspired by her favourite artist, Jennifer Hudson.
Mum Janette, 48, said: “It wasn’t until she started at Southmoor she wanted to sing and I thought she was mad, but she got up, did it and that was it.
“She’s excited about performing, it’s what she loves to do.
“I’ll enjoy watching her and I’ll tell her to just enjoy the moment, it’s a great life experience. I’ll be a bit nervous for her though.”
