MASKED men burst into the home of a pensioner couple in what is thought to have been a raid on the wrong house.
Detectives in Peterlee are appealing for help to hunt the gang of three after the incident in Sunny Blunts.
A man knocked on the back door of a house asked to be let in shortly before 9pm on Tuesday.
When the 74-year-old man and his 66-year-old wife refused him entry, they heard two loud bangs from behind the door and two other men burst in, causing a considerable amount of damage.
The man who initially knocked on the door then brandished a knife, and demanded to know where “The Green” was.
When the retired couple said they had no idea what he was talking about, he indicated there must have been a mistake and the gang left.
The intruders wore camouflage clothing and dark ski masks. Two were 6ft tall and the other 5ft 7in.
