Mango, North Terrace, Seaham

A fantastic addition to Seaham's seafront has arrived in the form of this Punjabi Indian restaurant.

Mango is stylish, relaxing and the smiling staff help to provide a warm and friendly atmosphere.

The food was glorious, not over-spicy, but packed with subtle flavours, and each dish was totally different.

For starters my partner and I ordered the poppadoms and chutney selection, 1.30, and the fish pakora, 2.95.

It was clear from the offset that the food was prepared to a very high standard and we devoured every morsel.

The chutneys were unique and the pakora, made with big chunks of white fish, was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing.

The service was prompt, though the waitresses did not seem to know about the food.

For example, when we asked what was in the Punjabi rice we were told: "Peas and stuff." And one of the chutneys? "Apples and bananas and stuff."

For our main course we shared butter chicken, 8.95, from the specials menu, and a lamb karhai gosht, 8.45.

We ate both curries with the Punjabi pilau, 3.45, and a peshwari naan 2.95.

As with all the dishes, the food was presented beautifully, with candlelit hotplates and stylish crockery.

The lamb was tender, the portions were big enough to fill two large appetites and the naan was beautiful.

The rice was a bit greasy and the portion was stingy for the price, but food-wise that was our only complaint.

My partner drank draught Cobra, I stuck to water and our total bill came to 37.85.

There were English options for people who do not eat spicy food, including chicken and scampi dishes.

And there was a beautiful ice cream, sorbet and dessert menu which we didn't have room for.

I would highly recommend this restaurant and hope to visit it again soon.

There were a few teething problems with the staff who, although good, were a little disorganised and inexperienced.

But overall it was a great meal and I cannot think of anywhere where I would rather go for a curry.
