A MAN climbed on to the top of the Wearmouth Bridge in protest at a family matter.

At about 9.15pm last night, police were called after the man was seen standing on the bridge.

Trained negotiators spent over three hours trying to persuade the man to come down.

Shortly after midnight the man agreed to allow firefighters use their aerial platform to fit him into a safety harness to reduce the risk of him falling from the bridge.

However, volunteers had to return to the incident after the man said he was going to remove his harness and jump into the river.

RNLI lifeboat volunteers returned to the scene.

The man then said he was happy to be assisted from the bridge to safety.
