Police are appealing for witnesses following a street robbery in Sunderland.
A 60-year-old was sprayed in the face and punched repeatedly in a vicious attack by robbers on a moped:
The man was crossing the road in Burnaby Street yesterday when he was approached by a rider and pillion passenger.
They demanded he hand over a bag containing an undisclosed amount of cash, but when he refused, he was sprayed in the face with a substance and punched several times.
The offenders stole the bag and made off on the bike towards General Graham Street and the injured man was taken to Sunderland Eye Infirmary for treatment before being released.
The offenders are both described as in their early 20s, having local accents and wearing silver helmets. The moped driver was a white man, 6ft tall and of slim build and the passenger was of stocky build, 5ft 6ins and wearing a black jacket.
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident, around 3pm, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to contact them.
