A man driving a VW Passat has been left with serious injuries and has been taken to hospital, while a woman in a Honda Jazz sustained minor injuries.

Both motorists were cut free from their vehicles.

Police and firefighters were also called to Foxcover Road, between Middle Herrington with Penshaw, just before 8pm, to release a woman in a Renault Grand Scene after the car struck a lamppost.

Police have remained at the scenes while the vehicles are recovered and debris cleared, with investigations under way into the causes of both collisions.
