Man rescued from burning yacht off the coast of Seaham

A MAN was pulled from his burning yacht this morning as it caught fire off the coast of Seaham.

The alarm was raised by the lone skipper at just after 6am on Friday when his 36ft yach Julia was 15 nautical miles south of Sunderland

The man made a distress call to Humber Coastguard before abandoning his vessel into a liferaft.

He was winched to safety a helicopter from RAF Boulmer as three RNLI lifeboats from Tynemouth and Hartlepool also launched to go to his rescue.

The casualty was flown by the helicopter to shore at Seaham where he was met by members of Seaham Coastguard Rescue Team. He was shaken but otherwise unharmed.

What remained of the yacht was towed to shore as some of the man’s personal possessions, along with the life raft were recovered.
