Andrew Hyden, 50, says he is “devastated” that his Congo African Grey parrot Grace flew away last weekend.

Mr Hyden, who works at the Asda warehouse in Washington, has had the bird for the last decade and is now desperately trying to track her down.

He told the Echo: “I keep her in a cage at my partner’s house in Fatfield and I let her out last Saturday.

“She was on my arm and then just seemed to take the chance to fly away. I couldn’t believe it.

“I’ve been devastated by it and I really want to get her back.”

Mr Hyden added that he thinks 12-year-old Grace may have flown to the Chester-le-Street or Picktree areas.

“It’s hard to tell different birds of this species because they all look very much the same,” he said.

“She’s got a ring on her leg and I’ve got all of her birth certificate documents.

“I’ll definitely give out a reward if anyone finds her.”

Anyone with information regarding Grace’s whereabouts should call Mr Hyden on 07958763413.
