Man killed on A1 is named

POLICE have identified the 36-year-old man killed after an accident on the A1.

Mark Bambrick, from Otterburn Terrace, Jesmond, Newcastle was killed instantly after a collision with a lorry.

The accident happened around 7pm on Monday.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said the family will not be revealing further details about the victim, and an inquest into his death will open in the next few days.

The Highways Agency were attending a breakdown on the southbound carriage between Chester-le-Street and the A690 turn off at the time of the accident, when a man appeared from the side of the road and ran across the southbound carriageway, central reservation and northbound carriageway.

The victim was not from the broken-down vehicle.

Other motorists reported seeing a man running on the hard shoulder and the main carriageway of the southbound carriageway.

Following the accident the road was closed for several hours.

The HGV driver was said to be suffering from shock, but did not require any medical treatment.
