A MAN was detained after climbing into a roof in Sunderland city centre.
Police were called after the 34-year-old clambered onto a building in Sunniside.
An area around Norfolk Street was cordoned off, while officers attempted to talk him down.
Fire and ambulance crews were called to the incident, which lasted from 11.15am to 1.50pm on Sunday.
The man was held by police but released without being arrested or charged.
A 38-year-old woman who lives nearby said: “Everything was cordoned off from the tenpin bowling, right down Sunniside.
“There were lots of police and fire engines, but we could not see from where we were until we got up to the flat, because they had cordoned it off quite well.
“We saw from the flat a man sitting on the roof top near the old Post Office building.
“The police were talking to him but he seemed quite calm.”
Northumbria Police confirmed no one was hurt in the incident.
