A MAN accused of trying to stab a woman to death and rape her was due to appear at crown court today.
Matthew Gallagher, from Easington Lane, is accused of knifing the woman six times in the stomach.
It is claimed that 47-year-old Gallagher told the woman he was going to rape her during the attack on July 12.
Gallagher, of Murton Lane, did not enter pleas to charges of attempted rape, attempted murder and common assault when he appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court earlier this month.
During that hearing, prosecutor Stan Sudworth told the bench that the allegations were so serious, they could only be dealt with at Newcastle Crown Court.
Gallagher was remanded in custody by magistrates until today, when he was due at the crown court for a plea and directions hearing.
