A MAN has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after an alleged sword attack on a woman.
Steven Miller, 28, of El Kebir Road, Sunderland, appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court also charged with attempt to commit grievous bodily harm.
Dressed in a checked shirt and jeans, Miller spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.
He was denied bail and remanded in custody. He will appear before Newcastle Crown Court on September 2.
Miller’s arrest came after an incident at a house in Villette Road, Hendon, at 10.40pm on Thursday.
A woman was left with serious hand injuries after an alleged attack with what police believe was a sword.
The victim is recovering from her injuries after being released from hospital.
A specially-trained police team carried out a raid at a property in Toward Road on Friday after the incident and remained at the property for most of the day, carrying out a detailed search.
Miller was arrested after the operation and charged on Saturday morning.
A 19-year-old man was also arrested after the Toward Road raid on suspicion of aggravated burglary, but was released without further action after being quizzed by officers.
One Toward Road neighbour said: “As soon as we opened the door there were police telling us to stay inside until they told us we could come out an hour later.”
