A LIFEBOAT crew and a fisherman saved a man from drowning after he fell 85ft from the Wearmouth Bridge.
The man, in his mid-30s, fell into the River Wear just before 10.45pm yesterday.
A fisherman and police officers on the quayside saw the man struggling in the water 20 metres west of the bridge.
The fisherman passed the man a lifebelt, which he held on to until the RNLI arrived.
The man was given treatment and taken to the specialist trauma centre at Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary.
