AN elderly man has died after being hit by a car.
Police have launched an investigation after the 79-year-old sustained fatal injuries after being hit by the Toyota Aygo in Chester-le-Street.
The man, who has not been identified, died after the incident in Waldridge Road, close to the junction with Wilfred Street, at about 5.45pm on Tuesday.
The victim was taken to University Hospital North Durham and later transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he died yesterday afternoon.
Police said he had sustained serious head injuries. The accident happened when the vehicle was heading east along Walridge Road.
The driver, a 43-year-old man, was uninjured. The road was closed for two hours.
