Man arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after A19 smash causes havoc

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a four-vehicle smash on a major road in Sunderland.

The collision happened at 7.20am, today, on the A19 southbound in Sunderland, near East Herrington.

Four vehicles were involved, however, no one was seriously injured. One person was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The road was closed to allow it to be cleared and vehicle recovered.

The collision caused major tailbacks on both sides of the A19 this morning.

Officers are carrying out inquiries into the collision and appealing for witnesses.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving above the alcohol limit.
