Police have arrested a man after he sat on the roof of a Wearside house for five hours.

The topless man was spotted climbing on top of a house in Hendon Valley Road, Hendon.

Residents say he went up there shortly after 2pm on Saturday

As darkness fell and it began to rain, the man agreed to come down shortly before 8pm.

He was then checked over by paramedics who were at the scene before being arrested by Northumbria Police on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

Rose Ali, 35, who also lives in the street, said: "This has gone on all afternoon. “He went up a bit after 2pm and then the police came here and started talking to him.”

One woman who was visiting a friend in the street but did not want to be named said: “He was refusing point blank to come down.

“I heard he was asking the police for a helicopter or a drone but said he wasn’t coming down for anyone

“It’s a total waste of police time.”

Several streets were cordoned off during the deal but were later removed.
