A MAN charged with murder after a stabbing at a Wearside house has appeared in court.

Nicolas Warrender, 23, of no fixed address, is accused of killing Kevin Gaunt at a property in Avenue Vivian, Fence Houses.

The incident happened late on Sunday night.

Mr Gaunt, 52, died from his injuries after being taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Residents living in Fence Houses have spoken of their shock at the death in their community.

Police cordoned off a large section of the street to carry out forensic investigations.

Warrender appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

No plea was entered by the defendant.

Chairman of the bench Janet Hutton said the case would be sent to Newcastle Crown Court, where Warrender will appear tomorrow. He was remanded in custody.

Five other people – including a man aged 23 and two women aged 28 and 20 – were also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They have been released on police bail, pending further inquiries.

Officers continue to appeal for witnesses to the incident and want anyone with information to contact them on 101, extension 69191.
