A MAN had to airlifted from a ship travelling along the Wearside coast after a fall left him with severe head injuries.

 The Ukrainian skipper of the Beau Magic was rescued by a Sea King helicopter dispatched from RAF Boulmer in north Northumberland, after the incident between Seaham and Hendon at 6.15pm yesterday.

 He was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where he remains in intensive care.

 A translator was also called in, so emergency services could speak to the injured man.
