Man airlifted after workplace accident at Sunderland’s Liebherr Crane plant

A MAN was airlifted to hospital after suffering serious leg and pelvic injuries in a workplace accident.

 The 57-year-old was hurt while working at the Liebherr Crane manufacturing plant in Deptford, on the banks of the Wear, opposite the Stadium of Light, at about 9am yesterday.

 It is believed that a girder fell on him.

 The Great North Air Ambulance was called and paramedics treated him.

 He was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

 The man, from Newcastle, remains in hospital where he is said to be in a stable condition.

 Brenda Foster, HR manager at Liebherr, said: “We are grateful to everyone who responded to the incident very quickly and we are waiting to hear how the man is recovering in hospital.”

 The Health and Safety Executive has been informed of and is investigating.
