Make a date with the past
We may still be firmly in 2009, but it's never too early to make a date for 2010 with our ever-popular Wearside Echoes calendars.
Bygone river scenes and iconic landmarks are the focus of the Echo's 2010 nostalgia calendar for Sunderland.
Streets, cinemas, shipyards and Sunderland supporters have all made the final selection too – as has a group of circus elephants.
"We have included several pictures which haven't been seen for many years, as well as many 'old favourites' as well," said Echo editor Rob Lawson.
"I'm delighted with the final choice of 13 scenes, and I'm sure readers will agree that they provide a really enjoyable trip down memory lane."
A photo of football supporters crossing Wearmouth Bridge in 1955 provides the front cover of the calendar, while the Cora cinema fills the January spot.
Two contrasting views of Low Quay on Sunderland's riverside have also been chosen, as well a picture of the river from Austin's bank in the 1950s.
"We always aim to bring back nostalgic memories for people each time they turn to a new month. We want to put a smile on their faces," said Rob.
"The popularity of nostalgia is ever growing and, whatever your interests, our calendar has pictures which are sure to capture your imagination."
Other scenes include traffic chaos – 1960s-style – in Borough Road, the demolition of a shipyard crane and a snap of Fawcett Street reading rooms.
There are also shots of circus elephants taking a stroll down Roker Avenue, the dismantling of Roker Park illuminations and an old scene of Coxgreen.
"It has been great fun going through our photos and trying to find ones that readers haven't seen in ages," said photographic archivist Susan Swinney.
"I've got a few favourites and really can't decide on a definite one, although the front cover is a great picture, as there is so much to look at in the scene.
"I also love the elephant photo, as it is such a fun picture.
The crane demolition one is very evocative too, and a wonderful 'action shot.'"
The 2010 calendars will be printed in the next few weeks and are due to go on sale at Echo outlets in the early autumn, priced at 3.99.
"Our calendars are always hugely popular, and we have stuck to the same winning formula of nostalgia all the way," said Susan."It was very difficult to decide which pictures to put in, as we unearthed so many great ones. At least there will be plenty of choice for 2011's calendar!"
