A London MP has said he is glad Newcastle United were relegated from the Premier League so he does not have to "suffer" attending their stadium next season.

Tottenham Hotspur-supporting Bob Blackman said he would be happy to visit Sunderland's Stadium of Light and Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium over St James' Park.

Sunderland stayed up at Newcastle's expense while Wednesday will be promoted from the Championship if they beat Hull City in Saturday's Championship play-off final.

The Magpies beat Tottenham 5-1 in the final game of the Premier League season, which saw the north Londoners fall to third place in the table below rivals Arsenal.

During debate on the Queen's Speech, the Tory MP for Harrow East said: "It's a pleasure to follow the honourable member for Washington and Sunderland West (Sharon Hodgson).

"I would also like to place on record my appreciation for the memorable speech from the member for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough (Gill Furniss), her maiden speech.

"The one thing that I would connect between the two honourable members that I have mentioned is that I look forward to visiting their football teams next season and not having to suffer attending St James' Park again this season."
