Woman detective accused of stealing clothes

A detective accused of stealing clothes from her force is to stand trial.

Julie Hays, an officer with Northumbria Police's crime department, denies taking the two jackets and two pairs of shoes on July 21 last year.

The court heard how the items, valued at more than 1,200 when new, were destined to be destroyed.

A four-day trial will be held at Durham Crown Court starting on Tuesday, July 6.

Smartly-dressed Hays has been suspended from her post pending the outcome of the case.

The detective constable, formerly known as Drummond-Milne, was released on bail until the next hearing.
