Witness appeal after gang attacks girl

A good Samaritan who scared off a gang as they attacked a schoolgirl has been urged to get in contact with police.

Officers in Chester-le-Street are appealing for the woman to step forward after the 12-year-old was assaulted.

The incident took place at about 1pm on Sunday as the victim and a friend were walking at the junction of Whitehill Way and Graythwaite, near the Cestria Health Centre.

The teenage gang, made up mainly of girls, set upon the victim, punching and slapping her. They continued their assault when she fell to the ground.

The attack ended when a blonde woman, driving a black Mini car, pulled up and shouted at the group to stop.

The girl and her friend ran off towards her home.

The victim was left with bruises to her face and neck and was taken by her parents to the University Hospital of North Durham and released after treatment.

Pc Paul Vickers, of Chester-le-Street Police, said: "I would appeal to the good Samaritan who came to the victim's aid to contact us as her evidence could be crucial to our investigation.

"

She was driving a distinctive black mini with a white roof and shouted at the gang to stop what they were doing.

"We have good descriptions of the people involved in the attack and are determined to bring them to account.

"We have received other reports of bullying incidents in which we believe they may have been involved. "

Pc Vickers has urged witnesses to contact him or Pc William Cooper at Chester-le-Street police station.

Durham Constabulary can be contacted on 0345 60 60 365 or Crimestoppers can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111.
