Untaxed cars towed away
More than 20 motorists had their vehicles clamped after a crackdown on tax dodgers.
A total of25 vehicle owners in the Durham City area were either caught with out-of-date tax discs or for failing to have a disc displayed.
Police, the DVLA and Durham County Council, had the vehicles towed to a DVLA compound in Newcastle as part of a joint operation on Thursday.
Some owners paid 260 overnight to get cars back, while those who did not pay will be hit with higher charges due to daily compound parking fees.
If the sum is not paid after seven days, they will face the prospect of having their cars crushed.
PCSO Chris Dunn said that during the past month officers and neighbourhood wardens had also spotted untaxed vehicles during their patrols of the city and surrounding villages.
He said motorists whose vehicles did not have a valid tax disc and were parked on the public highway were committing an offence.
PCSO Dunn said: "The operation was a warning. More action will follow in the coming months. Those who flout the law have a choice, they can tax their vehicle or face losing it."
