Tyne and Wear Metro cancelled after cable thefts

Metro trains were suspended for the third time in two days after thieves targeted a railway line.

Operator Nexus shut the line between South Shields and Jarrow early today to allow engineers to repair the damage.

Earlier this week, Nexus offered a 1,000 reward to catch cable thieves in the Sunderland area.

Services have been disrupted twice on separate occasions between Pelaw, Sunderland and South Hylton in the past two days.

Nexus director of rail Ken Mackay said: "Each time someone tries to steal cables, damage is caused which can take many hours to repair.

"Engineers get to the scene as quickly as possible, but trains have to be slowed down or stopped while the work is done."
