Two naked women spotted on Roker beach
Skinny-dippers have been spotted letting it all hang out in the summer sunshine.
While Wearside might not be experiencing quite the temperatures sweeping other parts of the country, that isn't stopping two local women from baring all.
And their presence on Roker Beach has caused such a stir, council officials were forced to request they preserve their modesty and cover up.
The pair were seen basking naked in the summer sun close to the Smugglers pub this week.
One dog walker, passing by, said: "I've seen them a couple of times now and was shocked to say the least.
"I couldn't believe it. They were completely naked, not a stitch on them. I thought to myself, has Roker beach become a nudist beach without me knowing?"
The two women, understood to be in their early 20s, were then spotted on Tuesday by lifeguards from Sunderland City Council.
The team of guards say the women were enjoying a spot of skinny dipping early in the morning and appeared oblivious to the fact they did not have any clothes on.
Ash Curle, Sunderland City Council Assistant Resorts Manager, said: "We've got award winning beaches in Sunderland that thousands of people enjoy all year round and we do encourage their use.
"We do occasionally have to remind some beach users about public decency, which is what we did on this occasion."
Hundreds of sun-worshippers have been flocking to Sunderland's beaches this week as the country enjoys record temperatures.
And while many object to the idea of sun-worshippers going au naturale, others are not so sure.
Some believe turning the Seaburn/Roker beaches into a nudist zone may prove a big attraction to the area.
One Echo reader said: "Signs could be erected, stating "clothing optional beach" or "free beach".
"This would only have to be a small area, but it would be big enough to put the city on the map.
"It could prove to be a real hit and be a money earner as there would be charges for nude volleyball and other activities."
