Tropical fish caught up in moving dilemma

The clock is ticking for a tropical fish which urgently needs a new home.

Barry Lane needs to find a new home for the alligator garfish before the weekend or it will probably die.

The fish is living in a huge tank but Barry's son, Ian, has to move out of Durham Road rented property by the weekend and can't take it with him.

Barry said no one else in the family has room for the 7ft tank, so they are at a loss with what to do with the fish.

The 63-year-old Whitburn man said: "We took the rest of the fish from the tank to Fish Alive in Durham and they took them. But they said they couldn't take the gator gar because it is too big and no one would want it."

The fish, which is almost 2ft long, will need plenty of space to swim about in or will probably die.

Barry said: "We had it in a transport container to take it to the shop, but it couldn't live in that. There's no way it would survive if we just tried to keep it in that.

"I have phoned around all the tropical fish shops I can think of, but no one wants it. Everyone says it is too big."

Barry said all he wants to do is find a new home for the grey-green fish.

He said: "We have tried all over to get a home and have had no luck. It would be such a shame if it died because it is a lovely-looking fish."

Anyone who keeps tropical fish and thinks they would be able to give the gator gar a good home should contact Barry on 0773 925 4955.
