The popular 15-year-old was hit by a Volkswagen Passat shortly after 8pm on Thursday.
Kane, a pupil at Monkwearmouth School, suffered head injuries, a shattered pelvis and broken ankles.
He was transferred from Sunderland Royal Hospital to Newcastle General where he was put on a life-support machine, but died on Friday afternoon.
Dozens of grieving friends gathered over the weekend to lay flowers and to pay their respects to the teenager, who is from the Roker area.
One tribute on a Black Cats shirt read: "Who's going to learn the football songs? Miss and love you loads, Joan, Chris, Leon, Nath and Kyle."
One of his friends told the Echo: "He was my best friend. I'm really going to miss him. He was funny, caring and really down to earth.
"You could trust him with anything and he was really popular."
Another school friend added: "It still hasn't sunk in that he has gone."
Hundreds of messages of condolence have been posted on websites by friends.
One poster on memorial site gonetoosoon.com said: "Rest in peace babe, you'll never ever, ever be forgotten.
"You mean so much to everyone, your cheeky smile was the best thing ever, you made everyone's day just with that.
"The funniest and nicest lad you could ever meet. They must have needed you up there! It came so sudden, no-one would have ever imagined it to be you that's gone. Love you Kaney,"
Another poster said: "I'm speechless. Everytime I think about the times we had together I get tears in my eyes. You were a very good friend to me and just can't imagine how we will all manage going back to school."
The driver of the Passat was said to be shaken but uninjured after the accident.
Inquiries by Northumbria Police are still ongoing, and police are appealing for information from anyone who might have been in the area at the time of the incident.
Officers are particularly keen to speak to driver of light blue hatchback-style car who may have been a witness.
