Towering manure blaze tackled
Horse manure posed a pongy problem to fire fighters when a pile of the stuff went up in flames in Sunderland.
Fire crews had to use hoses and pitchforks to deal with 30tonnes of smouldering straw and manure at Offerton, Penshaw, yesterday afternoon.
Two fire engines from North Moor and one from Sunderland Central were called out at 2.45pm and worked for more than three hours in freezing conditions to stamp out the flames in the giant mound of dung.
The all clear came in just before 6pm. It is not known what started the blaze, but manure fires can be caused by a build-up of heat in the compost pile.
