Tony Jeffries's old boxing club ready for big fight night

An annual fund-raiser promises to pack a punch in helping hundreds of Sunderland children.

Boxing fans are being invited to an amateur fight night in aid of one of Sunderland's oldest youth projects.

The sportsman's dinner tournament is held every year by Lambton Street Youth Centre, bringing in much-needed funds for the year ahead.

The project, based at Falkland Road, Ford Estate, has been keeping kids out of trouble since 1901 and has had 15,000 youngsters through its doors over the years.

Lambton Street Youth Centre still going strong.

Project co-ordinator Kevin Howard, who has been with Lambton Street since 1991, said: "We are charging 30 for a four-course meal and the fights, which is a very low price.

"We know there is a recession on and money is tight, but we are hoping people will come down and show their support."

The event is at the Roker Hotel, on Friday, March 26. Tickets will be available on the door for 10-a-head, but guests are advised to book ahead.

Lambton Street's boxing ring and professional facilities are used every night of the week by hundreds of youngsters – boys and girls – who would otherwise have nothing to do.

Sunderland's Olympic bronze medallist Tony Jeffries threw his first punches under the centre's watchful eye and went on to become a local hero.

Kevin, who boxed with the project as a teenager said: "The kids appreciate this place. That's what they tell us and that's why it is so important."
