Thousands turn out for Durham Miners' Gala
Tens of thousands of people descended on Durham City for the annual Durham Miners' Gala at the weekend.
This year's Big Meeting was the 126th, and visitors were able to admire more than 72 banners and listen to about 40 brass bands.
The pits may be shut, but politics still plays a part on gala day. Guest speakers included former London Mayor Ken Livingstone and Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn.
There was more music to be heard on the Racecourse Field, which also hosted the now traditional funfair in the afternoon.
Four new banners were paraded and later blessed at the annual gala service in Durham Cathedral.
Families lined the city centre for the procession, with many parents explaining what the day was all about.
