Thorney Close man beaten up in street
A man was beaten to the ground during a violent street confrontation.
Robert Marsden suffered an injury to his chin and a black eye after he was assaulted by Darren Hill and Lee Smith.
Newcastle Crown Court heard how Mr Marsden had been walking through Sunderland with a friend when he became involved in a row with the pair and their pal Jordan Pulling.
After the assault, which left Mr Marsden on the ground, Smith made off with his mobile phone.
Hill, 21, of Twickenham Road, Thorney Close, Sunderland, admitted assault on Mr Marsden as well as a separate, unrelated assault charge.
Smith, 20, of Southwick Road, Sunderland, admitted assault and theft.
Pulling, 19 of The Oval, Sunderland, admitted a public order offence.
Prosecutors accept Pulling played no real part in the attack on Mr Marsden, which happened on June 10 last year, but was verbally abusive.
Judge John Evans sentenced Hill to nine months' imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, with a two-month curfew and 100 hours unpaid work.
Smith was sentenced to a community order for 18 months with 100 hours' unpaid work and programme requirements.
Pulling was fined 200.
