There's no stopping Jean

She may pushing 73, but energetic Jean Lay has no plans to give up work just yet.

And although the pensioner works full-time for a mailing company, she still makes sure she has time for her family and dotes on her 29 grandchildren.

Mum-of-seven Jean, of Chester Road, Sunderland. also cared for husband Ronnie, before his death almost six years ago.

Daughter Paula, who put Jean forward for the Echo's competition, said: "My mother has worked all her life, providing for all her family.

She looked after my dad every night after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, while working during the day.

"We had him home for three years and when the time came for him to go into hospital for 12 years, she still visited him five times a week.

"She also lost two sisters within a year."

Paula, from Red House, said her mum was expected to retire 12 years ago, but said she was determined to carry on.

"She was supposed to retire at 60, then 65, but refused to because she likes to be active," said the 42-year-old.

"When she finally has to retire from her job, she will then go and work at the Women's Royal Voluntary Service at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

"There's no stopping her and when I'm 72 I hope I have the same strength, enthusiasm and caring and loving nature."
