Thanks to everyone!

A charity worker has been inundated with heartfelt "thank you" letters from troops after she helped send dozens of care packages to the front line.

Joyce Walker, local area co-ordinator for the Support Our Soldiers charity, has spent months packing and dispatching parcels to service personnel serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The mum, who has received scores of moving letters from grateful soldiers, paid tribute to the generous Wearsiders who made donations to the latest collection in the run-up to Christmas.

Joyce, of East Herrington, Sunderland, said: "I've had so many letters from the troops thanking me for the packages.

"But the truth is the collection just wouldn't have been possible without the help and support from local shops, businesses, pubs and individuals.

"People have been so generous. It doesn't matter how much of a tough time are having with the credit crunch – they are always willing to give something. Everyone has been amazing."

Joyce said donations of toiletries, savoury snacks, confectionery, clothing and books have flooded in since the launch of the latest drive.

She said many of the letters from the front line – one of which told how a brigade had suffered seven deaths in 10 days – were deeply moving.

"They show just what the troops are going through out there and how these packages can help morale," said Joyce. "They can make such a difference and it means such a lot to them – the fact that the people back home are thinking of them.

"These 'thank you' letters are for everyone who helped with the Christmas campaign, everyone who made a donation and organised a collection."
