Teens dig in for village glory

A BID for gardening glory has received a boost from a group of artistic youngsters.

Young people taking part in the Prince's Trust scheme are backing efforts by residents in Easington Colliery and Village to scoop a Northumbria in Bloom award.

The group has spent a week creating a floral display in the shape of the trust's logo at a site on Seaside Lane.

The youngsters, who have been working with Durham County Council's Pride in Easington team, took on the project after being challenged to do something for the good of the local community.

Michelle Morton, Pride in Easington officer, said: "As well as digging over the plot and planting it up, the group also put a lot of effort into fund-raising, taking part in a number of sponsored activities in order to raise the cash to buy the flowers."

Northumbria in Bloom judges are due to visit Easington on July 9.
