Sunderland leapfrogs Newcastle in lucky lottery towns league

Sunderland postcodes are the fourth luckiest in the country for National Lottery jackpots.

The city is upfrom eighth place last year, but Newcastle upon Tyne slips one place to fifth in the jackpot-winning luck stakes.

The other postcode areas in the top 10 are Perth in Scotland - which climbs four places - Teeside, Dartford in Kent, Hull and Bradford.

One in every 8,642 of people in the UK who are eligible to play the Lottery has now won a share of a National Lottery jackpot.

This compares to around one in 19,000 when the figures were first published in 2002.

Since the National Lottery's launch in 1994, the Medway Towns postcode has had one top prize-winning ticket for every 5,717 adults who are eligible to play, compared to Ilford with one in every 6,285.

The latest statistics include winners who took publicity and those who did not. They are based on prizes paid out up to and including November 2008.

Top prizes are classed as the top-tier prizes or jackpots across all National Lottery draw-based games and scratch cards.
