Summer of fun for city's kids

Children have no reason to be bored in Sunderland this summer break with an array of fun activities planned.

Leisure and Wellness Centres will be providing activities from learn-to-swim crash courses to diving summer camps, badminton, karate, tennis workshops and dance mat sessions.

And the city libraries are offering the Quest Seekers summer reading challenge, when youngsters have to meet three challenges to find the Golden Book. Activities will include T-shirt printing, Wii console games, balloon modelling and magic.

Sunderland Aquatic Centre has a fresh programme of crash courses including mini water polo and rookie lifeguard sessions.

Sunderland Tennis Centre will run a summer coaching programme, with some youngsters taking part in a tournament at the end of the summer.

Silksworth Ski Slope will be offering young people skiing and snowboarding for both beginners and the more advanced.

Soft play will be free on Fridays for families with children under seven at Houghton Sports Centre from 10am to 4pm, and free bowls sessions will be running on Saturdays from noon to 2pm.

Other sessions, including trampolines, soft toys, bouncy castle and slides, will cost 2.50 per person.

Trampolining and gymnastics will take place at Washington Leisure Centre every Tuesday and Thursday and there will also be team games for youngsters aged eight to 12.

Houghton Sports Centre will be holding a playtime party on Thursday, September 3, from 10am to 11.30am for children under five and a Hawaiian disco on Friday, September 4 from 2pm to 4pm.

For full details, pick up a programme from any of Sunderland's leisure centres, libraries or the Tourist Information Centre, or contact 5616161 to request a copy or download it here.
