Rush hour chaos on A19

Heavy rainfall and a broken down vehicle caused severe delays on the A19.

Tailbacks backed up on the south bound carriageway after a Vauxhall Astra became stranded in the middle lane between the A1231 Wessington Way and A183 Chester Road turn off at 5.20pm today.

Police recovered the vehicle from the carriageway 20 minutes later.

> Elsewhere, heavy traffic southbound just north of Peterlee means the A19 is moving slowly, with normal conditions expected to resume at 6.15pm.
