RNLI rescues seal trapped by rocks

Sunderland Lifeboat volunteers helped save the life of this young seal pup after it became trapped beneath boulders.

Three RNLI volunteers helped Becky Ferry, a marine mammal medic from British Divers Marine Life Rescue, save the animal.

Helmsman Clive Fallon saw the seal fall between boulders when trying to escape two members of the public who approached it as it lay on rocks near Sunderland Yacht Club yesterday afternoon.

After looking at the position of the seal, I immediately realised that it needed help to get free," said Clive.

He was joined by Becky and RNLI colleagues Paul Nicholson and Anthony Jobling. After almost an hour, the team managed to attach a line around the seal and pull it clear from beneath the large rocks.

"Our volunteers worked alongside Becky who used her specialist marine mammal training to ensure we did not scare or hurt the pup during the rescue," said Clive.

"Unfortunately in this case, the members of the public who initially approached the seal scared it, causing it to fall between the boulders and become trapped."

If you see a seal that may be abandoned, thin or ill, call for advice and assistance on the British Divers Marine Life Rescue hotline on 01825 765546 or RSPCA hotline on 0300 1234 999.
