The Sunderland run was the first in a string of similar events across the North East and the rest of the UK.
Julia Haran from Cancer Research UK said it had given the Race for Life series a fantastic start.
She said: "The atmosphere at Sunderland Race for Life is always fantastic and we are really grateful for the support that we got from the people in Sunderland.
"Last year we had over 2,500 people taking part and they raised 147,000. This year we've had well over 3,000 women and we're hoping that together they'll help raise 157,000," she said.
