Pupils' praises sung after Durham Cathedral concert

Hundreds of schoolchildren hit the right note when their voices filled Durham Cathedral.

After months of hard work and rehearsals, 240 children from eight Sunderland primary schools took part in the sixth annual Durham Cathedral Partnership.

The pupils worked with choristers to agree the music programme and rehearse before taking part in the Singing Day performance in front of friends and family in the world-renowned cathedral.

Schools taking part were Bexhill Primary, St Mary's Primary, Redby Primary, Fatfield Primary, Academy 360, Richard Avenue Primary, Town End Primary and Valley Road Primary and they were led by James Lancelot, the cathedral's director of music; Stephen Auster, Sunderland's music co-ordinator; and Mish Kelly, the cathedral's outreach worker.

The concert was a blend of sacred and secular music and the Sunderland singers were supported by choristers from the cathedral.

The partnership project between Sunderland City Council and Durham Cathedral has proved such a success that it has received national funding to expand further into two other local authorities, Durham and South Tyneside.

Mish Kelly said: "It has been a great pleasure to visit schools across Sunderland and work with the children and staff."
