- Sympathy from mother who knows the pain.

Craig Walker, deputy headteacher at Pennywell, said everyone at the school who knew the young soldier is devastated by his death.

Mr Walker said: "It is absolutely tragic. Our thoughts and sympathy go out to his family.

"Nathan was a lovely lad. He was intelligent and sporting, the sort of lad anyone would be proud to have.

"Even though he left us to go to St Aidan's, he still kept links with the school and even came in last year to show staff his army medals.

"There is no doubt about it that Nathan had a smashing career and life ahead of him."

Mr Walker said the atmosphere in the school this morning after the news of Pte Cuthbertson's death broke was very sombre with staff remembering an "outstanding" young man.
