Prison officer stab attack suspect went on machine gun spree

The prisoner suspected of stabbing three warders was jailed for a machine gun attack.

Kevan Thakrar was sentenced to three life terms in 2008 for the murders of three men to settle a 10,000 drugs debt.

The 22-year-old is thought to have been involved in the incident at Durham's high-security Frankland prison on Saturday, which saw three guards injured in an attack with a glass shard from a vinegar bottle.

Thakrar is believed to have been moved from the jail, which houses 700 prisoners.

He is suspected of carrying out the attack after barricading himself in his cell, in a bid to be placed in segregation with his brother Miran, 25.

Craig Wylde, one of the injured guards, was said to be in a stable condition at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The 28-year-old former soldier, had surgery on the foot-long wound he suffered.

His brother Lee, 33, from Durham, said: "When I got the phone call telling me about Craig's injuries I thought he was dead. All the arteries have been severed.

"Without medical attention he would have died, he would have bled to death."

Two other injured warders were also said to be recovering.

Durham Police are investigating the incident. Danny McAllister, the national director for high-security prisons, reportedly visited Frankland yesterday.

Following the attack in G Wing, Prison Officers Association chairman Colin Moses said: "This could have been prevented by stab vests, stab vests which they (the Prison Service) flatly refuse to issue."

Kevan and Miran Thakrar were convicted of the murders of Keith Cowell, 52, his son Matthew, 17, and friend Tony Dulieu, 33.

A court heard they made their victims kneel down before opening fire on them with a Mac-10 sub-machine gun, in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, in 2007.
