Presenter backing Bede bid
TELEVISION presenter David Dimbleby has become the latest public figure to back Wearmouth and Jarrow's nomination for World Heritage Site status.
The well-know current affairs and factual programme commentator visited the site and Bede's World in Jarrow for a new art series, which will hit our screens next year.
The twin Anglo-Saxon monastery of Wearmouth and Jarrow, created by Sunderland's patron saint, Benedict Biscop, has been nominated for the 2010 bid.
Other world heritage sites include Durham Castle and Cathedral, Stonehenge, the Grand Canyon, Sydney Opera House and the Taj Mahal.
Mr Dimbleby said: "This twin monastery should be recognised as a World Heritage Site in honour of a man whose renown is celebrated world wide and whose contribution to our knowledge of the past has enriched our generation and will be cherished by generations to come."
The Right Reverend Mark Bryant, Bishop of Jarrow and chairman of the Wearmouth – Jarrow Partnership, said: "You can pledge your support in two ways, either by visiting www.wearmouth-jarrow.org.uk of signing a book of life at one of the venues linked to the bid."
The books can be found at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, The National Glass Centre and St Peter's Church, in Sunderland.
