Post office on the back of a lorry
A post office service looks set to be restored to a town centre – after a temporary counter arrived on the back of a truck.
Seaham has been without a shop since the closure of the franchise within the former Co-operative store in Green Street on Saturday, August 21, which led to the redundancy of its five staff.
Proposals had been made to move the service to a shop in Church Street, between JD Fashions and Bainbridge's greengrocers, but came to a halt when the company said it was "unable to proceed".
Although the landlord told the Echo there were no issues with the lease of the building, posters inside the Post Office said the relocation had been cancelled.
The Portakabin arrived last week and has been unloaded into the car park between The Duke pub and derelict Golden Lion.
The Post Office has been unable to say when it will open, what services it will offer and if the staff from the former outlet will run the counter.
A spokesman said: "We have been working hard to restore post office services in Seaham as quickly as possible.
"Unfortunately, we have been unable to secure permanent premises, therefore, as a temporary solution we are preparing to install Portakabin facilities, located in the car park behind the former Co-operative Foodstore, on Green Street, in order to maintain services in the area.
"We would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused by the temporary closure.
"While the branch is closed, customers are advised to use Deneside Post Office on The Avenue, Parkside Post Office on Parkside Crescent, Sunderland City Post Office on Fawcett Street, or any branch of their choice."
Coun Charlie Walker, deputy leader of Seaham Town Council, said the measure was good news.
He said: "I would like to thank everybody who supported the council and its helped get the job done."
