Peterlee's Apollo Pavilion up for Civic Trust award
It once attracted yobs and prompted clear-up pleas to TV series Jim'll Fix it.
Now, a controversial artwork has been shortlisted for an award for benefiting its community.
The Apollo Pavilion in Peterlee, right, is up for a title at the Civic Trust Awards, given to projects judged to be culturally, socially or economically beneficial and make an "outstanding contribution" to the quality and appearance of the environment.
The concrete structure, built in Sunny Blunts in the 1970s and designed by Victor Pasmore, had 400,000-worth of improvements last year.
The staircase, which had been removed, was replaced, giving visitors access to the top level of the structure and its lighting was reinstated, with two original murals restored.
The surrounding space has also been re-cobbled and reed beds and plants added to the west end of its lake.
The awards event will take place on March 12, in Liverpool and will be hosted by Sunderland-born television presenter George Clark.
Successful entrants from the region last year included Sunderland Aquatic Centre.
