No butts – time to quit smoking

Mum Angela McMillan aims to make stubbing out smoking a family affair after finally kicking her 10-year habit.

The 34-year-old has vowed to never smoke again after quitting with the help of health trainer Remy Smith, of Sunderland Teaching Primary Care Trust.

Now the mum-of-three is encouraging her brother-in-law Chris Brewis, 22, to follow her lead in the run-up to No Smoking Day on March 10.

Angela, of Dene Avenue, Houghton, said: "I was smoking about 15 cigarettes a day, but now I can't stand the smell of them – I'm not even tempted.

"I want my brother-in-law and mum to quit smoking as well, so I'm putting them in touch with the health trainers, as Remy helped me so much."

Health trainers are experienced NHS stop-smoking advisers and offer one-to-one support over a 12-week period at venues such as health centres, GP surgeries and community centres.

Angela found out about the service from her local Job Linkage and decided to sign up in November last year in her bid to stop smoking.

Angela, who is mum to Shannon, 16, Allan, 14, and Annabelle, eight, said: "I had tried to stop smoking by myself last year, but I only managed to stop for three weeks. I really felt it was time to quit, so I thought I would get some extra support."

Angela attended weekly appointments with Remy at Houghton Racecourse Community Access Point to receive information, advice and support to help her quit.

Remy was also able to recommend nicotine replacement patches and lozenges for Angela.

Angela, who has not smoked for three months, said: "Remy gave me the motivation I needed and I knew she was there when I needed some help. I already feel the difference from quitting – I don't get out of breath as easily."

Chris, of Houghton, who has smoked for six years, said Angela's dedication had inspired him to quit.

"I've been very impressed by Angela's success and hopefully I can do the same," he said.
