Mum told: 'Your baby girl's a boy!'
Meet baby Dylan, formerly baby Olivia.
First-time parents Claire Robson and Andrew O'Shaughnessy were shocked when they discovered their baby girl was, in fact, a boy.
With lovely little dresses hanging in the nursery, the couple now face a radical rethink after medics revealed the truth after discovering the baby suffered from a rare genital condition.
For five weeks, the pair believed they were proud parents of a girl, born at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Claire, 21, who gave birth by emergency Caesarean, said she burst into tears when a consultant revealed little Olivia was a boy.
Claire, who works as a checkout girl in Tesco, says she is only now getting used to the idea of having a boy.
She said: "It's taken a while. When they told us I was in shock. I just started crying. At first it felt as though I was grieving for my girl, but I still had a baby.
"We're fine about it now though and as we'd already picked a boy's name and a girl's name before the birth we decided to change it to Dylan. We're just happy we have a healthy baby."
Claire was seen throughout her pregnancy by midwives at the University Hospital of North Durham.
She was having regular scans due to complications in her pregnancy and it was during one of the ultrasounds she was told she was having a girl.
As complications with the placenta got worse, staff at the hospital decided the baby needed to be delivered and transferred Claire to Newcastle's RVI.
However, with no incubator free, she was moved to Sunderland Royal, where Dylan was born 11 weeks prematurely on May 26.
Claire, of Brandon, said: "As soon as they held up the baby I asked 'what is it, a girl or boy?' and they told me it was a girl."
Experts have pointed out that genitals develop fairly late in a pregnancy and when a baby is born prematurely, it makes it more difficult to be certain of the sex.
Tests also showed that Dylan suffers from a genital abnormality known as hypospadias.
Claire said: "He's got to have two operations and is currently on oxygen because he has problems with his lungs – but he's going to be okay.
"We'll all be able to have a laugh about it when he's older, but I'm sure he won't like the fact that people though he was a girl when he's a teenager."
Andrew, 27, and Claire say they will now give all of the girly gifts they received from family and friends to Sunderland Royal Hospital to pass on to new mums.
Claire added: "We have received lots of new, blue cards and gifts from family and friends, which was nice.
"We'll also be keeping the pink cards for when Dylan gets older so he can have a look at them all.
"It's a story to tell the grandchildren."
